The New Zealand green-lipped mussel Perna canaliculus is found in the pristine coastal waters of New Zealand. The Maoris have claimed for centuries that consuming local green-lipped mussels has helped them maintain good health.

Researchers of the RMIT University in Melbourne discovered, the biological most active compound is a unique combination of lipids and omega-3 fatty acids

STABILIZED OIL OF HIGH QUALITY
Aspitol capsules only contains the lipid fraction of the mussel, which is the biological most valuable compound. Ultimate
care has been taken to ensure  the fatty acids do not become rancid and keep full biological activity:
1)
After harvesting, the mussels are transported in refrigerated trucks to the manufacturing plant where they are crushed and centrifuged. The mussel extract is immediately stabilized and freeze-dried to prevent early oxidation of the fatty acids,
2) After freeze-drying, the mussel oil is extracted.
3)
The extracted mussel oil is further stabilised with vitamin E to prevent oxidation in the capsules. Only GLMO produced in this way has kept its full potency of biological properties.

EACH CAPSULE ASPITOL® CONTAINS:
Stabilized oliextracted from the New Zealand green-lipped mussel 50 mg
Virgin olive oil 100 mg
Vitamin E (d-alfa-tocopherol) 0,225 mg
Other Ingredients: Gelatin, sorbitol syrup, glycerol

WHY ASPITOL?
Aspitol is a source of superior omega-3 fatty acids that support health in many ways, including:
• Support joint mobility;
• Protect against age-related joint discomforts;
• Support healthy skin;
• Support normal respiration.

NO PROTEINS
Aspitol only contains the stabilized oil, and does not contain proteins. This allows Aspitol to be used in case of shellfish intolerance.

RECOMMENDED USE
Adults: Take 4 capsules daily with a meal during the first month, then 2 capsules daily. Children: calculate dosage according to body weight.

WhY IS GREEN-LIPPED MUSSEL OIL SUPERIOR TO GREEN-LIPPED MUSSEL POWDER?

Green-lipped mussel is also offered as dried powder. This powder is sold in capsules or as loose powder in small bottles. However, it still is not possible to stabilize omega-3 fatty acids in powder form for a longer period. That is why omega-3 fatty acids in powder form easily oxidate, loose their biological activity and even become toxic. This is the reason why green-lipped mussel powder starts to smell rancid when exposed to air.

Another disadvantage of green-lipped mussel powder is, it contains the mussel proteins which may cause allergic reactions for those with a shellfish intolerance.

And last but least: the amount of green-lipped mussel oil produced is growing by the year, and so is the amount of powder the oil has been extracted from. This powder is a waste product with hardly any biological activity, as it contains hardly any omega-3 fatty acids. Yet, this powder is not destroyed but sold as green-lipped mussel powder for lower prices!. Many actually think this powder is of superior quality as -due to the absence of oxidating fatty acids- is does not smell as bad as green-lipped powder that still contains the fat fraction!

The advantages of green-lipped mussel oil can be summarized as follows::
• The omega-3 fatty acids in green-lipped mussel oil are the biological most active compounds;
• Green-lipped mussel oil can easily be stabilized and is of consistent high quality;
• Green-lipped mussel oil does not contain proteins and can well be tolerated by people with a shellfish intolerance;
• Green-lipped mussel oil is salt free and can be used well in a low salt diet;
GLMO is a natural ingredient without any side effects, even safe for children.

THE SECRET OF GREEN-LIPPED MUSSEL OIL REVEALED

Recent research has shown that green-lipped mussel oil does not only contain the well-known fatty acids EPA and DHA bevat, but also a few other, rare omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are found only in the algae living in the pristine, cold, deep, salt New Zealand coastal waters. Green-lipped mussels feed on the algae by filtering the water, and store the omega-3 fatty acids in their body fat.

One of these newly discovered omega-3 fatty acids is an 'ETA-like' C20:4n-3 fatty acid (watch out: it is not ETA!) with a biochemical structure identical to arachidonic acid. This newly discovered fatty acid may account for the biological activity of green-lipped mussel oil, by 'imitating' arachidonic acid. However, the enzymes which are bound to the ETA-like fatty acid are not stimulated (when using arachidonic acid as a substrate), but inhibited by the different positioning of the double bonds. As a result, the production of 'unfavourable' leukotriens and prostaglandins is inhibited instead of stimulated, and the overexpressed lipoxygenase pathway becomes normalized.

Although the newly discovered ETA-like fatty acid is present in green-lipped mussel oil in relatively small quantities, its biological significance is enormous. Due to this fatty acid, the biological activity of green-lipped mussel oil is 200 times as high as fidh oil.

WATCH OUT: ETA-LIKE IS NOT ETA!

The new discovery of the 'ETA-like' omega-3 fatty acid in green-lipped mussel oil has drawn major attention. Some producers of food supplements try to gain easy profits by mentioning on their products the amount of ETA. However, the fatty acid ETA differs completely in biological activity from the newly discovered 'ETA-like' fatty acid in green-lipped mussel oil. The only resemblance is, both fatty acids have a chain of twenty carbon atoms. However, the double bonds are on different positions. This is the reason both fatty acids show completely different biological activity.
